Vacation during a tournament

Sort:

Hi,

I am playing in the 2nd Chess.com tournament, one of my opponents has left for a vacation? I believe that if you know that you will be taking a vacation during the tournaments days, then u should not have joined the tournament in the first place. Tournaments should be a little bit more intense in my opinion. Thus, I believe that throughout the time that a player is involved in a tournament, they should not be allowed to take a vacation for longer than 3 days.

I am not sure if this idea has been expressed before. Will be glad to hear some feedback. Thank you for your time.

The idea has been expressed alot. The first official chess.com tourney is still on the go, it will be on the go for many more months. In the course of say 5 months, people will have to sometimes attend to other things, and will  use their vaction time. For example, I've to go to a wedding this weekend and will not be able to make the moves - I'll probably need 4-5 days.

Also, the tourney says that vacation time is available. It makes more sense for people to not sign up for a tourney if they don't like the rules, rather than the tourney changing for the person that has signed and does not like the rules stipulated. If you want a tourney with no vacation time - create one.

Now, I'm away to get my hair done for the big day - byeeeee.

2nd Chess.com tournament is the first tournament that I have joined and like pavlick I also have now the vacation experience. Although I do agree that people can't allways be available to play, I don't think it is fair to other players to wait while you are on vacation. In my case I believe that if I was unable to make a move within a 3 day's when taking part in a tournament then the fair thing to do would be resign from the tournament. If the tournaments are to allow for vacation time then I think that chess.com will be lucky to finish this tournament within a year. If half the entries take 15 days or less of their vacation time tournament, you are talking about 16 years consecutive and if we are realistic then 3-4 years to find a winner. I am not sure how the knock-out works and hope that a winner is found withih a year or less. If not what is the point of a tournament. I know that yes you can create a tournament with your rules. Do you really want hundreds of small tournaments?

I would suggest using the rules as a guide and try be fair to all.....

Aye, its akward at times but i think the responsibility rests on the TD (tournament director) to set the "rules", as this helps everyone.

In some tournies time controls will be relaxed and vacatation isnt a problem at all, as in the above example when Erik said it was fine to take it.  In other tournies, like one i just made (Fast Play Only #2 May 2008) the aim is to cater to those players who only want fast moving games, as so i made a note that vacation is ok for weekends but not otherwise.  Making this note beforehand is important i think so players know exactly what they are getting into, because tournies are of course optional and there are so many that they can suit all types of player and time controls. I personally like a bit of both, depending on my situation, fast and slower.

A tourney just ended that i entered not long after starting here on this site,it lasted nearly 3 months, and had less than 10 people in it :P So the official large scale tournies could last a looong time ;)

Ive said it before but its worth sayin again, if ye like tournies then definately think about going for premium membership because then ye can join as many as ye like and if a few players ye are in games with are on vacation, it doesnt bother ye.

So now ive blethered on longer than i intended, the long an the short o it is.. hopefully TD's will clear up this issue when they create tournies and then ye can pick and choose which ones suit yer time management best :) Cheers

ps. glad tae hear it Maradonna, did yer hair style go down well.. ;P

 exactly.

Patience is a virtue .  What's the rush?  And as someone said, some of these tourneys last for months.  Vacation is a necessary and good feature.

Most people are playing a bunch of games so what does it matter if one goes slow.
