What do the Numbers mean preceding tournament names?

Hi.   I was wondering what the numbers mean in the titles that precede tournament names. For example, I have seen:  3|0.  I have only been playing online against the computer for a little bit and would like to try games against people but I am reluctant without knowing what I am getting into.

I can't seem to find anything on the FAQ page.

Thanks, John

That is the time control for the tournament. The first number is the amount of time each player starts with, and the second number is any additional time added to the clock per move. 3|0 means each player starts with 3 minutes and there is no additional time awarded throughout the game.

Other popular time controls include:

  • 3|2 (same as 3|0 but each player gets an additional 2 seconds after each move)
  • 5|0
  • 5|5
  • 10|0
  • 15|10
