Who knew that placed in the right position,  pieces might reveal the energies of fissile materials, far beyond what I had come to expect from wood, from stone, or even from magnetized plastic on a train? Who knew, for example, that rooks could exert force laterally, or that in a ritual called "x-ray attack," a bishop could occupy all the spaces on a given diagonal at once?
