GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus
Bio
Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus is a Turkish chess grandmaster, one of the youngest grandmasters ever, and the youngest player ever to reach a 2600 FIDE rating. Erdogmus won the U-8 European Chess Championship in 2019, a year before he had to stop playing over-the-board chess due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After returning to competitive play in 2021, the young chess star caught the world's attention after gaining nearly 500 rating points in a little over a year. Erdogmus quickly earned the FM title, and shortly after got all the three norms and required rating to become an IM. With this, he became the youngest international master in Turkey's history.
In 2022, Erdogmus also won the most prestigious ChessKid tournament, the Youth Chess Championship, after defeating CM Ilan Schnaider.
On April 1, 2024, Erdogmus qualified for the grandmaster title at an age of 12 years, 9 months, and 29 days. He is the fourth-youngest player in history to attain the title and only the sixth ever to qualify at age 12. At the time he earned the title it made him the youngest GM in the world. The next month, he became the highest-rated 12-year-old in chess history at 2569 (while GM Judit Polgar remained the highest-ranked 12-year-old at 56th).
At the 45th Chess Olympiad in September 2024, Erdogmus scored 8/11 for the 12th-place Turkish team, achieving a FIDE rating of 2601, making him the youngest player to ever have a rating above 2600.
