In 1993 the winner of the Candidates cycle was British GM Nigel Short. Short and Kasparov didn't agree with FIDE's terms for the match and held their own world championship. Between 1993 and 1996 there were two separate cycles, one with the classical lineage, and FIDEs system, which included matches and tournaments. In 2000 Kramnik shocked Kasparov to take the title and later won a match with Veselin Topalov in 2006 to reunite the competing cycles.

In 1993 Kasparov and his challenger, Nigel Short, broke from FIDE and held their own World Championship match.

The winner of the 1995 cycle to play Kasparov was the young Indian GM, Vishy Anand. The match started with eight straight draws, followed by an Anand win. However, at that point, Kasparov took over and kept his title by winning 10.5-7.5. Kasparov won twice on the Black side of the Sicilian Dragon, including this exciting 13th game.

Vladimir Kramnik shocked the world by winning with an undefeated 8.5-6.5 match against Garry Kasparov and becoming the 14th World Champion in the classical lineage.
